AFTER PROSTATE SURGERY
Removal of part or all of the prostate gland is termed a prostatectomy.
Some urinary incontinence (leakage) is common immediately after surgery,
however for some men the leakage persists beyond the 90 day recovery time
and treatment becomes necessary.
A physical therapist at Family Physical Therapy will
evaluate your problem and help manage the incontinence following prostate
surgery. Patients are evaluated for pelvic floor strength and then
placed on a program to improve the strength and control of pelvic muscles.
Some common treatment approaches in the clinic setting may include:
- Biofeedback training to help learn to locate and use the pelvic
floor muscles correctly.
- Electrical stimulation to improve muscle function.
- Instruction in a home exercise program to improve pelvic floor
function.
- Bladder training to help the bladder return to normal function.
- Instructions in how to brace pelvic floor muscles during coughing,
sneezing, laughing, etc.
- Suggesting lifestyle changes which may affect the bladder.
If you feel you are a candidate for physical therapy after prostate
surgery, consult your physician for referral to Family Physical
Therapy, or a physical therapist in your area specializing in
this treatment.
